A lobby showing seven Trainers can still reject a remote player. Total lobby capacity and remote capacity are separate, and Pokémon GO’s official help pages currently disagree on the remote limit. Before spending another pass, check the lobby’s remote count, the join route and the current event notices and any applicable in-game message.
“Lobby is full” with fewer than 20 players
A raid group can hold up to 20 Trainers, but the published remote-player limit is inconsistent. The joining and remote-raid FAQs say five remote Trainers per lobby; the newer Friend List FAQ says 10. Both describe temporary adjustments. Check the current event notices and any applicable in-game message rather than treating either number as certain. Invited friends count against the remote limit.
- Ask the host how many are local and how many are remote. For example, if the active remote cap is five, a seven-person lobby with two local and five remote Trainers cannot admit a sixth remote player, even though overall places remain. If the cap is 10, that same split alone does not explain the rejection.
- If remote places are full, agree on a different lobby or have someone who can legitimately attend join in person. Confirm the group before joining: a separate lobby may not contain your friends.
- The Nearby/map joining FAQ says a remote player can be placed in a new lobby when remote capacity is reached. An invitation to a full lobby can instead be rejected. Friend List joining explicitly prevents joining a different lobby when the selected one is full.
Lobby and invite limits
The official joining and invitation guidance describes the separate lobby limits. Compare it with the Friend List page below.
Read joining guidanceYou joined an empty or unfamiliar lobby
An empty lobby does not prove nobody is raiding at that Gym. You may have entered a different group, or the intended lobby may have started. Compare the Gym, boss, countdown and group code with the host. Coordinate a fresh group if they do not match, then check the names before the battle begins. A private lobby code is the three Pokémon pictures shown at the top of the lobby.
Invitation disappeared or will not open
An invitation disappears when the battle starts if you never joined that lobby. Ask the host to create a fresh lobby and invite you again while there is still time. If the host was the only Trainer in the lobby and left before anyone else joined, that invitation no longer works. If someone else joined before the host left, the invitation can remain usable, subject to capacity and timing. An in-person host can invite up to five friends at a time and, after a short cooldown, send more invitations; the remote-player limit still applies.
- Open Nearby and select the active raid invitation. If you tapped a push notification, opening the app is only the first step; choose the active invitation in Nearby.
- Ask the host to confirm the lobby is still waiting and has remote capacity, then retry the fresh invitation promptly.
- For future invitations, enable Raid Invitations in the game’s notification settings if you want push notifications. An in-game notification is available when the app is open.
Join from your Friend List without an invite
You can join a friend who is waiting in a raid lobby without an invitation if you are at least Great Friends and that friend shares their raid attendance. In your Trainer Profile, open Friends, select the friend showing the Raid Boss, and check the player count and countdown. Tap Battle; the button indicates whether the join uses an in-person or Remote Raid Pass.
If the friend or raid is missing, ask whether they are still waiting and have Share Raid Attendance with Friends enabled in Settings; also check your friendship level and the raid type. If the selected lobby is full, this route tells you and does not move you to a different lobby. Ask the host to coordinate another lobby. A player who joined through the Friend List cannot invite additional Trainers to that same lobby.
Friend List joining and published limits
Official Pokémon GO Help Center. This page currently lists different remote limits from the other official pages below.
Read the Friend List rules“Too far away” or the wrong join button
First distinguish an in-person range error from a remote invitation problem. In-person joining requires you to be within the Gym’s interaction range. For an eligible raid at a distance, open an active invitation or a raid visible in Nearby or tappable on the map and look for the Remote Raid Pass entry button. An invited Trainer who is within interaction distance uses a Battle Pass instead. Do not spend another pass simply to test a repeated error.
If the correct remote route still gives a distance error, the message alone does not establish why. Check that the invitation and raid are still active, confirm the battle type and capacity with the host, then retry a fresh invitation. If the error persists, capture the exact message and contact in-app support rather than assuming a particular device or travel condition caused it.
Check the daily cap and battle type
The published daily limit also conflicts: the invitation and remote-raid FAQs say 10 Remote Raids per day, while the Friend List FAQ says five. Both allow for event increases. Check current event notices and any applicable in-game message and compare it with your own participation. The host can receive an error when inviting someone who has reached their limit; buying another pass does not remove the limit.
Some raids require local participation. The Friend List FAQ names Shadow and Elite Raids as unavailable for remote joining. Verify the specific raid and event announcement before organizing a remote group. Max Battles have a separate remote-entry flow that also requires Max Particles and has its own pass rules; do not apply those rules automatically to an ordinary Gym raid.
Disconnected or lost after the battle started
Return to the same raid rather than buying a replacement pass immediately. If you started an invited battle but an error stopped you completing it, support says the invitation remains in Nearby while the battle is ongoing, and for a few minutes afterward so you can still encounter and catch the boss. Open that invitation and try to return promptly. The extra encounter window is not a promise that a new battle can be started after the raid timer expires.
If the boss was not defeated, official support says your original pass grants access to retry that same raid until its timer runs out, without another Raid Pass. Check the timer and make sure it is the same Gym and raid. Once that timer ends, the stated free-retry access ends; do not assume a replacement or refund. If the app requests another pass or the raid is no longer available, stop and contact support rather than assuming a second purchase will repair the first attempt.
What to send support
For a suspected technical failure or Raid Pass issue, open Map View → Main Menu → Settings → Help, then tap the contact button in the upper right. Include the exact error, approximate time and time zone, Gym or raid name, whether you were invited or joined another way, what happened before and after the battle began, and any relevant screenshot. Explain whether the original pass appears missing. Support can review the issue; the official guidance does not promise a replacement or refund.
For an item bought with PokéCoins, use in-app support. If you purchased PokéCoins themselves and want a monetary refund, the Help Center directs you to the relevant Apple, Google Play or Samsung store to review its policy and submit the request.
