Walking does not unlock your first Mega Evolution in a Pokémon’s evolutionary line. Buddy walks can occasionally award Mega Energy only after you have previously Mega-Evolved a Pokémon from that line.
If you have never Mega-Evolved that line
Collect the initial energy through a matching Mega Raid or specific research that awards it. Check the raid or research reward rather than assuming an available task supplies the energy you need. If neither is currently available to you, making that Pokémon your buddy does not bypass the prerequisite.
If you have already Mega-Evolved that line
- Check that your current buddy belongs to the evolutionary line you previously Mega-Evolved.
- Check the correct energy balance: Mega Energy is species-specific. Certain Pokémon with X and Y Mega forms also require separate X or Y energy, so read the form and energy label carefully.
- Compare the balance before and after walking. The official description says energy can be earned occasionally; do not treat every short walk as a guaranteed payout.
Still seeing no energy?
Record the buddy species, the Pokémon you previously Mega-Evolved, the energy label and balance, and your distance readings with times. These details help support check eligibility and distance tracking. If the game is not recording any distance, investigate that separately before using more walks as an energy test.
