A Buddy can be a long-term battle project, a companion for walks, or a Pokémon you simply like. The efficient choice depends on the reward you want. Affection hearts build a lasting Buddy Level; Mood is temporary and fades as interactions become less recent. A full hunger meter puts your Buddy on the map. These are three different things, so a happy Buddy is not automatically a Best Buddy, and a Best Buddy is not automatically on the map.
The practical rule: feed the Pokémon before starting map-dependent activities, collect the easy interactions during a short session, and switch to the Best Buddy you intend to use before a battle where its CP boost matters. This guide is based on the official help pages, not a claim of personal testing. Events and game updates can change the interface or bonuses.
Choose the reward before the Pokémon
| Goal | Good choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stronger battle participant | A Pokémon you actually plan to use in raids, Gym, Rocket or Trainer battles | Best Buddy's CP boost only applies while that Pokémon is your current Buddy. |
| Catch assistance and presents | A Pokémon you are willing to take to Great Buddy | Catch Assist can return a deflected Ball; presents can grant a Bonus heart. Neither is guaranteed on demand. |
| A collectible relationship | A favorite you want to reach Best Buddy | Buddy Levels do not decline over time, so you can make progress gradually. |
| Walking project | A Pokémon whose Candy you want while you explore | Set it as Buddy before the walk and check its status; Excited Mood reduces the distance needed to collect Candy. |
You can pursue several projects over time, but only one Pokémon is your current Buddy at once. To change it, open the Buddy Profile and choose Swap Buddies. Buddy History also has a swap option. The official limit is 20 swaps per day, so leave yourself room to switch back to a battle Buddy rather than using every swap early.
A short routine that creates useful progress
1. Tap the Buddy portrait beside your Trainer portrait on the map to open its profile. In Today's Activities, grey hearts show opportunities still available today; pink hearts show those already earned.
2. Open Play with Buddy and feed Berries in AR or Quick Treat mode until the hunger meter is full. That earns a treat heart and puts the Buddy on the map. Hunger falls over time, so check again before a later walk or battle.
3. In the interaction screen, pet the Pokémon until it spins and jumps, and take a snapshot. These are separate activity categories: look for the corresponding hearts turning pink rather than assuming one action completed both.
4. While the Buddy is on the map, walk, use it in a Gym, Raid, Rocket or Trainer Battle, follow a Route, or spin the Photo Disc at a PokéStop or Gym you have never visited. An unvisited PokéStop has a white ring before its first spin. Pick the activities that fit your outing rather than making a special trip for every category.
5. Reopen Today's Activities before finishing. If a category is all pink, switch to another grey category instead of repeating the capped one. Daily heart counters reset at midnight local time. Bonus hearts are conditional, so treat a present, Souvenir or suggested location as an opportunity, not a promised daily step.
For example, suppose you have ten minutes at home and a walk later. Feed, play and take a snapshot first. Before leaving, confirm the Buddy is still on the map, then follow a Route or visit an unvisited stop if one lies naturally on your path. If the walk is postponed, the earlier hearts are still useful; you do not have to complete every category for the session to count.
Mood, Poffins and heart limits
Mood depends on how frequently and recently you interact, and falls over time. Excited is the highest Mood. While a Buddy is Excited, the profile displays double heart icons next to activities, allowing additional hearts, and Candy walking distance is reduced. The Bonus category is an exception: becoming Excited does not increase its heart allowance. If the Mood falls, regain Excited to continue earning the extra hearts; hearts already earned remain credited.
A Poffin automatically fills the hunger meter, makes the Buddy Excited and awards the maximum daily hearts in the treat category. It also keeps the Buddy full, on the map and Excited longer. Poffins are sold in the Shop for PokéCoins. They are optional: use one when a longer outing makes the combined benefits valuable to you, not merely because a heart is grey. The official instructions do not specify a guaranteed non-Poffin interaction schedule or duration, so do not plan around an assumed timer.
Consider two days. On a short home session, free Berry feeding, play and a snapshot may be enough for your goal. On a planned long walk, an optional Poffin offers immediate Excited Mood and a longer period on the map. In both cases, the activity screen is the authoritative check for what remains available that day.
What each Buddy Level actually gives
| Level | Useful benefit | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Good Buddy | The Buddy can join the map when fed, and its Mood becomes readable. | Start a walk by filling the meter; being selected alone is not enough to make it appear. |
| Great Buddy | Catch Assist may bounce a deflected Ball back; the Buddy may find presents containing useful items. Opening a present gives a Bonus heart. | Useful when catching frequently, but neither the assist nor a present is guaranteed. |
| Ultra Buddy | The Buddy can find Souvenirs or point out an interesting PokéStop. Spinning the indicated stop gives a Bonus heart and bonus items. | Take the suggested detour only when convenient; a Souvenir is a collectible rather than a consumable. |
| Best Buddy | A CP boost applies in eligible battles while the Pokémon is set as your current Buddy; it also earns a ribbon. | Set your intended fighter as Buddy before the battle. The ribbon alone does not activate the boost while another Pokémon is selected. |
The help page does not list the heart thresholds between levels. Use the progress indicator in your own Buddy Profile instead of relying on a projected completion date. A Buddy Level persists even when Mood falls, so missing a day does not erase the relationship.
Troubleshoot the missing heart or boost
| Symptom | Check | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Buddy is not on the map | Its hunger meter may have fully depleted. | Feed until the meter fills, then confirm it appears before a map-dependent activity. |
| A repeated action earns no heart | The activity's hearts may all be pink. | Choose a category with a grey heart, or wait for the local-midnight reset. |
| A new-place heart did not appear | The place may already have been visited, or the Buddy may not have been on the map. | On a future outing, feed first and spin a genuinely unvisited stop or Gym. |
| Best Buddy seems to lack its CP boost | Another Pokémon may be selected as current Buddy. | Swap to the intended Best Buddy before starting the battle. |
| A Gift arrived but no Bonus heart | Gifts for your inventory and Buddy presents are different rewards. | Open a Buddy present when one is found; ordinary Gifts from a Buddy do not themselves award hearts. |
| Extra Excited hearts stop appearing | The Buddy may no longer be Excited, or that activity may be capped. | Check the Mood and category hearts; interact again to regain Excited if needed. |
Don't confuse a Buddy's present with Gifts to send to friends. The official help page says Buddies can bring Gifts from nearby PokéStops at any Buddy Level, but receiving those Gifts does not award Affection hearts. Presents found by a Great Buddy are a different perk and can give a Bonus heart when opened.
A battle-day example
Imagine you have a Best Buddy Pokémon you use in raids, but you spent the morning walking with another Pokémon for Candy. Before joining the raid, open the current Buddy's profile and swap back to your raid Pokémon. Confirm it is the current Buddy, then join the battle with it in your party. The CP boost is tied to being the current Buddy, not merely having reached Best Buddy in the past. After the raid, you can switch back to the walking project if you still have swaps available.
The best routine is the one that fits your day: earn the accessible hearts, keep the map condition in mind, and reserve swaps for the Pokémon whose active benefit you need.
