Choose Hero Gear upgrades by their displayed buffs, distinguish enhancement and Mastery from exclusive gear, and check Ascension requirements without wasting useful equipment.

Choose your next Hero Gear upgrade by the hero you actually use, the buff shown on the item and the materials the preview will consume. A higher power number alone does not tell you whether an upgrade solves your current battle problem. This guide separates normal enhancement, Mastery Forging, exclusive gear and the later Ascension and Empowerment steps.

💡
Before spending anything: Open the intended hero and inspect the equipped item. Check its class, quality, current enhancement and mastery levels, then read the next upgrade preview. Keep gear used by another team out of the material selection. If a requirement or refund is unclear, stop before confirming.

1. Identify the gear and the upgrade track

First check that you are on the intended hero’s equipment screen. Keep Chief Gear plans separate from this decision.

  • Enhancement increases an item’s Hero and Command buffs. Its materials can include Enhancement XP Components and other Hero Gear.
  • Mastery Forging is a separate upgrade for gold-quality gear. The official wiki lists Furnace level 20 and gear enhancement level 20 as its entry requirements, and Essence Stones as upgrade materials.
  • Exclusive gear is specific to its gold-quality hero. It provides stats and two exclusive skills, and uses matching Widgets. Do not budget those Widgets as if they were ordinary gear XP.

2. Pick a buff that addresses your actual problem

Start with one formation you use regularly. Open its heroes and write down the relevant item buffs before deciding which piece to improve. Read the named troop type and stat in the Command section; separately check the Hero stats. Do not compare two items by colour or total power alone.

  • If your goal is troop survivability, shortlist items whose preview actually increases the relevant troop Health or another defensive stat for that formation.
  • If your goal is damage, compare the relevant Lethality or other offensive increases shown in the preview. Check which troop type receives the buff.
  • If Arena or Exploration is the goal, also inspect the Hero stat changes and test the formation against a comparable fight. A recommendation for one march should not automatically become your Arena spending plan.

For example, suppose you are choosing between a Health increase on the troop type that collapses first and a Lethality increase elsewhere. Start by checking the battle report and formation: is survival really the bottleneck, or are positioning, hero skills or troop composition the problem? If survival is the issue, the matching Health upgrade is a sensible candidate to test. That is a decision method, not a universal ranking of gear slots.

Hero Gear matters in Arena and Exploration too. Century Games’ July 2024 update states that enhancement and mastery also improve Exploration troop stats, with the same change applying to Arena. Avoid advice that treats these upgrades as irrelevant outside Expedition.

3. Enhance without consuming your next team’s equipment

  1. Open the intended hero, select the item and open its enhancement screen. Confirm that the selected item is the one you plan to keep using.
  2. Inspect the proposed materials individually, including anything selected automatically. Set aside equipment needed by another formation or a replacement hero.
  3. Read the resulting level and buff changes. Spend only the materials needed for the next planned step rather than clearing the inventory for a larger power number.
  4. After confirming, reopen the item and verify its new level. Check the formation before the next battle.
💡
Equipping and consuming are different actions: Trying equipment on another eligible hero is not the same as selecting it as upgrade material. Do not consume a useful piece merely to move your investment. If you plan to reforge or reset anything, read that operation’s current return preview first. This guide does not promise a full refund of XP, Essence Stones, Widgets or other materials.

4. If Mastery Forging is missing

Compare your Furnace and the selected item with the entry requirements in section 1. Check the item’s upgrade screen for the Mastery Forging option alongside Enhancement.

If it is still absent, capture the item and Furnace screens and ask in-game support about that specific item. Do not buy Essence Stones simply to test whether buying materials reveals a locked button.

5. Ascension needs more than enhancement level 100

Century Games lists enhancement level 100, mastery level 10 and a server-age unlock for Gear Ascension. Its FAQ does not give a universal day number. A level-100 item alone is therefore not enough: check mastery and your state’s available feature before planning the spend.

Ascension requirements

Check the official requirements before committing valuable gear.

Read Ascension help

At the Ascension screen, verify the item you will keep, the resulting item and every additional piece required as material. Preserve anything needed by another team. The official support page confirms that reforged Mythic Gear can be used as Ascension or Empowerment material; being reforged does not protect an item from selection.

Reforged gear warning

Reforged Mythic Gear remains eligible as material.

6. Plan Empowerment as a separate material decision

After Mythic Gear becomes Legendary, the official Empowerment milestones are enhancement levels 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100. Empowerment uses Mithril plus the required Mythic Gear, and can be performed up to five times. Read the displayed cost for your particular milestone rather than treating one upgrade’s bill as the cost of the entire path.

Support lists 100 as the maximum enhancement level after ascension. When comparing a guide or calculator with your item, check whether it labels pre-ascension and post-ascension levels separately. Do not assume two differently labelled level numbers refer to the same upgrade.

7. Recheck equipment when changing heroes

Before replacing a hero, compare the old and new equipment screens and the eligibility shown for each item. Where the new hero can equip an existing piece, inspect that option before spending on a second investment. Recheck both formations after any equipment change so that you do not send the old team into battle with empty slots.

Your final spending checklist

  • I know which formation and battle problem this upgrade is meant to help.
  • The preview improves a stat that matters to that formation.
  • I have checked the correct upgrade track and its unlock requirements.
  • Every item selected as material is genuinely expendable.
  • I have read the result and any refund or consumption warning before confirming.
