A useful trade closes a gap without creating a worse one. Before offering a card in Pokémon TCG Pocket, decide exactly what you want to gain and which copies you want to keep. A familiar illustration or Pokémon name is not enough information for every collection goal.
Use the checks below when a card is missing from the trade screen, when you need a particular expansion entry, or when you are deciding whether an apparent duplicate is really spare. The worked examples are hypothetical planning exercises, not claims about specific cards or their current availability.
Define the gap before choosing an offer
| Your goal | Write down before trading | What would count as success |
|---|---|---|
| Finish a battle deck | The required card text and how many usable copies you still need | The deck is ready while you retain the copies needed by any deck you still plan to use. |
| Fill an expansion entry | The expansion and collector number of the missing entry | The received card matches the entry you intended to fill. |
| Collect a particular version | The illustration, language and finish you care about | You receive the version you actually wanted, rather than a similar-looking substitute. |
These goals can overlap, but they need not. For a battle-only goal, ask whether you would be equally happy with a less decorative version that performs the same job. For a collection goal, do not let someone else’s preferred version silently replace your own target.
Find the point where the trade stops
| What you see | Check this first |
|---|---|
| You cannot offer to the player | Trading is friends-only and unlocks 14 days after starting the game. Check active trades and the recipient’s suspended-offer setting. |
| The card is absent from selection | Check Social Hub > Trade > ? > Detailed trade list. Both cards need equal rarity. If one has flair, both need flair; if one has a gold frame, both need one. A wishlist cannot override eligibility. |
| The trade button is gray | Heavy demand can temporarily suspend trading. Try again later. |
Work through the row that describes your actual problem before changing your plan. Record the exact screen and message if you need help. “My card is gone” could describe an unavailable selection, an unexpected version, or a changed collection count; those are different questions.

Pokémon Support: Trading FAQCheck the expansion and language, not just the picture
For a card registered in multiple expansions, choose the outgoing expansion through Edit Card > Set under the expansion section, then select the expansion. For an incoming offer, use View > Trade Info to inspect its expansion.
For example, suppose your target is a missing entry in expansion X and your partner is looking at a copy registered under expansion Y. Pause before agreeing and compare the expansion information. The point of this example is to resolve the identity of the exchange, not to assume that every similar card shares registration or can be switched between sets.
Owned cards keep their acquisition language when you change the app language. To inspect your other-language copies, open the card in My Cards and use the middle button at the top.
For the outgoing version, select the card, open Edit Card, and set the language and flair you intend to send.
If language matters to your collection, include it in the agreement before anyone commits resources. A clear request is “this collector number from this expansion in this language.” If language does not matter to you, say so to avoid unnecessary back-and-forth.
Calculate your own keep threshold
Decks can contain at most two cards with the same name. That deck-building limit is not a rule that you must trade everything beyond two: collectors may want additional versions, and a copy you value is not automatically spare.
Choose your keep threshold first, then calculate the surplus. This is a personal planning tool, not an in-game trading requirement: subtract the copies you intend to retain from the usable copies you own, then treat any negative result as zero. The result is your comfortable surplus.
| Hypothetical inventory | Your chosen keep threshold | Comfortable surplus |
|---|---|---|
| Three suitable copies | Two for your intended battle use | One |
| Two suitable copies | Two because you still want both | Zero |
| Four copies, including one favorite version | Two for battle use plus that separate favorite copy | One |
The third row assumes you deliberately want three distinct copies retained. If the favorite is already one of the two you plan to use, count it only once. Write the actual copies down when the total is ambiguous; labels such as “for battle” and “for collection” can refer to the same card.
Now consider two hypothetical offers. Offer A fills a missing illustration but leaves you without a copy needed by the deck you wanted to play tonight. Offer B fills a less exciting collection gap while preserving that deck. Neither is universally better. The useful comparison includes both what arrives and what you can no longer do afterward.
Compare the full cost before committing
The July 2025 trading rework removed the old trade-token system. Instructions to destroy extra cards to make trade tokens describe the former system.
Check the displayed Shinedust charge before completing the exchange. The current rules and cost information are under Social Hub > Trade > ? > About trade rules.
Treat the outgoing copy and the displayed resource bill as separate costs. A trade that is affordable today can still use a copy you hoped to offer elsewhere. Before spending, compare it with your next most important target rather than assuming that any available exchange deserves priority.
Use another route when trading does not fit
Booster variants can contain different cards, so check the pack’s offering rates for your target. A wishlist can also mark wanted cards in Wonder Pick, although some rare cards are unavailable there.
Pack points do not expire and belong to their expansion. Check the relevant exchange for the exact card and its price instead of combining balances from different expansions.
Use those routes to compare choices, not to justify opening packs blindly. If your target is unavailable through your present options, leaving the gap open is a valid outcome. You do not need to sacrifice a valued copy just to make progress somewhere on the collection screen.
Verify the outcome before moving on
To replace a card in an active trade, cancel and start again. Cancellation restores the committed cards, items and spent trade stamina. Trade History shows the latest 30 exchanges within 90 days.
If your collection count unexpectedly falls, inspect Obtain Flair, Trade History and Share History. Trading, sharing and obtaining flair can all reduce the cards shown in My Cards.
Finish by checking the original goal: the right card, the intended version, and enough retained copies for your next use. Then update your target list. A completed exchange is useful only if it leaves your collection closer to what you wanted.
