Finishing a wave with the Merchants does not trigger the ordinary automatic coin payment. Their coin sacks must be collected through tile placement, and the reported payout depends on your balance when you collect them. Waiting can help, but waiting with an unchanged balance does not make a sack steadily grow.
Start by separating three problems: no payment after a wave, a sack that remains on the board, and a smaller payout than expected. Each calls for a different adjustment.
First, confirm that you are playing Merchants
Open the guild information and check active modifiers before comparing your run with a Founders guide. The developer added access to this information through the guild banner in the October 5, 2022 update.
For Merchants, an unchanged balance after a wave is not, by itself, evidence of a broken save. A player reported receiving no turn income even above 30 coins; the reply explained that the higher income applies to sacks. Raising your balance does not restore the usual between-wave payment.
If you are using another guild, do not apply this diagnosis automatically. Check that guild's description and the run's modifiers instead.
Collect the sack with a legal tile placement
Place a tile on the sack's space to collect it. Being able to see a sack, or having a tile beside it, does not itself complete that collection. The placement still has to fit the board. Level Winner describes this explicitly, and a separate player account describes the temptation to place unwanted tiles just to reach sacks.
Before covering one, look at the entire piece you are about to place. Does it leave the route extendable? Does it occupy a position you need for a tower? Does reaching the money consume resources you would otherwise save? A visible reward is only useful if the resulting board remains workable.
Gardens are another coin source described by the developer. A safe coin-generating placement can be useful while you leave a sack for later, but do not assume you can draw the tile you want on demand.
Read the payout from your balance, not the sack's age
The September 19, 2022 community explanation gives these tiers.
- Holding 0β9 coins: collect 1 coin per sack.
- Holding 10β19 coins: collect 2 coins per sack.
- Holding 20β29 coins: collect 3 coins per sack.
- Holding 30 or more coins: collect 4 coins per sack.
These are community-documented values, not an official formula or a current mobile-build playtest. Use them as a baseline, then check your run's actual payout and modifiers if the result differs. The mobile sack-placement changes discussed below are documented in the July 2023 update; that does not independently verify every payout interaction.
The September 2022 community table uses the balance at collection. It does not describe a reward that increases simply because a sack has been left alone.
For example, if your balance stays at 10, leaving the sack through another wave still puts you in the same two-coin tier. The useful reason to delay is a realistic chance to reach the next threshold before collection, not the passage of another wave on its own.
A pickup can move the next sack into a better tier
Here is a small example using that table. Assume two separate, legal sack collections, no spending, no other coin rewards and no special effects:
- Start with 9 coins. Collect the first sack for 1, reaching 10.
- Collect the second sack for 2, reaching 12.
The first sack was not wasted merely because it paid the lowest amount. In this example, it unlocked a better payout for the next one. Compare the whole sequence rather than judging each pickup in isolation.
This example describes separate collections. Do not use it to assume how the game resolves several sacks covered by one placement.
Check the order of collecting and spending
A two-coin skip can cross a threshold in the other direction. The developer's gameplay notes give two coins as the ordinary skip cost. Consider the balance-only comparison below, starting at exactly 10 and assuming one sack collection plus one two-coin expense:
- Collect first: 10 + 2 = 12. Then spend 2, leaving 10.
- Spend first: 10 β 2 = 8. Then collect 1, leaving 9.
One coin separates these hypothetical sequences. They illustrate the reported payout tiers, not two guaranteed legal routes on every board.
If the available piece can collect a sack safely before a planned expense, check that option. If it cannot, the arithmetic does not justify blocking your path or buying an unnecessary detour. The better balance is only an advantage when the placement is useful too.
A skip also has a purpose beyond its coin total: it may get you past an unusable tile. Evaluate the new placement opportunity, not just whether the counter stays above a round number.
Stop saving when the defense needs the money
Early Merchant advice recommends preserving coins while the route is stable, then spending when enemies repeatedly get through. That is a sensible limit on saving for a bigger payout. A threshold is not worth protecting at the cost of the run.
Before deciding to wait, inspect the next wave. The developer explains that selecting the red enemy-count circle shows the upcoming enemy types and numbers. Use that information alongside the damage your last wave caused; do not assume that surviving once means the same layout is safe again.
There is also a limit to treating the board as a bank. The September 22, 2022 PC patch raised the maximum sacks on the isle from six to ten and added a starting sack. That documented cap rules out an unlimited stockpile under those rules. It does not establish an exact spawn schedule or promise that missed spawns will be paid back later.
Old advice about avoiding flags needs context
September 2022 players recommended limiting expansion to keep sacks within reach. The July 6, 2023 update changed that situation: sacks spawn beside existing tiles whenever possible, the Merchants' starting isle is slightly larger, and the guild starts with an additional bridge. The official iOS 1.1.4 notes include all three changes.
The wording matters: whenever possible is not a guarantee that every sack is convenient. Still, rejecting every flag because of launch-era advice is too rigid. Expand when the space helps your defense or gives you useful placement options. Keep an eye on whether the remaining sacks can actually be collected with the pieces you can fit.
Choose your next move
- No coins after a wave: confirm Merchants and look for a collection opportunity, rather than waiting for automatic interest.
- A sack remains visible: check whether you actually covered its space with a legal tile placement.
- The payout seems too small: compare the balance immediately before collection, especially after a paid skip.
- One pickup reaches a threshold: reconsider the next sack at the new balance.
- Saving is costing health or blocking useful construction: collect and spend for a concrete defensive improvement.
The goal is a board that can survive and still reach its rewards. Keep the payout tiers in mind, but let the next useful placement decide when to cash in.
