A dead commander in Bad North: Jotunn Edition does not normally return when you rest. Before giving up on the campaign, check three different possibilities: replay the island if your campaign allows it, use a Holy Grail on an eligible fallen commander, or return to a checkpoint where that commander was still alive.

Those options have different costs. A Grail is a one-use rescue; a checkpoint rewinds campaign progress. And a commander who is merely fatigued does not need either.

This guide covers Bad North: Jotunn Edition, not save-file editing. Sources were checked on November 5, 2026. The rules below use published developer material and clearly identified community evidence; no platform was tested in-game. Menu labels and availability may vary by platform or version.

First: dead, tired, or missing from the screen?

Check what actually happened before choosing a reset.

  • You watched the commander fall and the squad was lost: use the recovery routes below. The official store description warns that losing a commander is permanent; Jotunn Edition adds the specific exceptions described here.
  • The commander survived but cannot deploy again this turn: check fatigue. Normally a commander fights on one island per campaign turn and becomes available again next turn. Jabena allows a second deployment. This exact confusion appears in a community deployment discussion. Ending a turn also advances the threat on the campaign map, so check your route before resting.
  • The portrait is a white square, distorted, or the soldiers are invisible: that is a different symptom. See the technical-problem section below instead of treating a broken image as proof of death.
  • The whole campaign is missing or will not load: stop here. Holy Grail and checkpoint advice assumes you can open the intended campaign; neither is an account or deleted-save recovery tool.

If the battle is still open, pause before leaving it. Check whether an island restart is available before returning to the campaign map. Do not choose a full campaign restart when you only mean to retry one battle.

Three separate recovery choices: replay the current island if available; use a Holy Grail on an eligible dead commander; or rewind to a reached checkpoint where the commander was alive. Route A: retry the island while the option is available

The developer introduced Replayable Levels as a campaign option in the Jotunn Edition update. Older mobile guidance calls the setup checkbox Allow Level Restarts. A level here is an island battle, not the entire campaign; follow the labels in your version.

If your current campaign has that option enabled:

  1. While still in the battle or its result flow, look for the restart-level option.
  2. Check that the action restarts the island, rather than the campaign or a checkpoint.
  3. Replay with a changed plan: move the vulnerable squad earlier, keep a route out, or protect the landing that overwhelmed it.
  4. After the successful attempt, check that the intended commander survived before continuing.

Do not assume that returning to the map lets you replay any previously completed island. Use the restart when the game actually offers it. A player discussion about the final battle distinguishes restarting the last level from accepting the result and exiting to the map.

If the button is missing, check the campaign's restart setting rather than repeatedly closing the app. One player asking why restart was unavailable discovered that the checkbox had been left off. The developer documents enabling replayable levels when starting a campaign; this guide does not promise that you can turn a no-restart run into a replayable one after a death.

Route B: use a Holy Grail without rewinding the campaign

The official Jotunn notes confirm that Holy Grail can bring back one dead commander. Check whether you actually possess an unused Grail in this campaign. Having seen the item in a guide or discovered it in the Codex is not enough.

The Jotunn update also added the ability to view dead commanders in the Upgrade screen. Check the fallen commander's entry there. Community item references describe applying the Grail to a dead commander rather than equipping it to a healthy squad as protection before battle.

Before using it:

  1. Confirm which commander is dead and which one you want back.
  2. Check that an unused Holy Grail is available and the game offers it for that commander.
  3. Read the action shown for the selected commander before confirming.
  4. Afterwards, check that the correct commander is back in your roster. A fatigue restriction is a separate issue from whether the resurrection succeeded.

Choose deliberately. Restoring an experienced squad with a useful trait may be more valuable than saving the item indefinitely, but your remaining army and route determine that decision. Do not spend the Grail merely because a living commander is unavailable for one turn.

Why the Grail may not solve your loss

There are two important limits supported by community reports rather than a complete official eligibility list:

  • A unit left behind when an island is abandoned: Casper's Steam item guide says this loss cannot be reversed with the Grail. Do not plan to leave a squad behind on the assumption that you can revive it later.
  • A local commander killed before being recruited: a player report, corroborated by another player, describes that commander being unavailable for revival. Owning a Grail does not make a rescue island safe to lose.

These edge cases were not reproduced for this guide. If your commander is absent from the eligible selection, do not assume the item is broken or consume it on somebody else as a test. Check the restart or checkpoint route instead.

Route C: return to a checkpoint, and count what you will replay

A checkpoint is a saved point in the campaign. It does not revive everyone in your present-day roster. The important question is: was this commander alive when that checkpoint was recorded?

The developer describes checkpoint islands as fixed points you can return to rather than starting the campaign again. Community explanations confirm that the roster reflects the state at that point.

Compare these two examples:

  • Alive at the checkpoint, killed afterwards: returning to that checkpoint takes you back to the earlier campaign state. You must replay the progress made since then.
  • Killed first, checkpoint reached afterwards: that checkpoint already belongs to the campaign where the commander was dead. It is not a way to resurrect them.
Two timelines show why order matters: a checkpoint made before a commander dies can rewind to them alive; a checkpoint made after the death cannot undo that earlier loss. Original timeline with hypothetical events, not a real campaign map. It illustrates checkpoint timing, not the number or spacing of checkpoint islands.

Before confirming a checkpoint restart, write down three things: which point you are returning to, who was alive there, and how much later progress you are willing to replay. Treat later rewards, recruitment and upgrades as part of the progress you are rewinding, rather than something you can keep while undoing only one death.

If your campaign has no checkpoint available to reload, or the available one is already too late for this commander, this route will not solve the problem. Do not replace it with New Campaign unless you have deliberately decided to start over.

When none of the three routes is available

You may have to continue with the surviving army or begin a new campaign. That is a normal consequence of the game's loss system, not evidence that a resurrection button is hidden somewhere.

Before abandoning a still-playable run, consider the practical cost. Can the surviving squads handle the enemies on your next reachable island? Is there an accessible recruitment opportunity? Would a checkpoint sacrifice an hour of progress to recover a squad you could replace sooner? There is no universal answer, and no guaranteed Grail waiting on the next island.

If you do start a fresh campaign and want room to learn, check the replayable-levels option during setup. Keep the existing save unless you intentionally want to remove it. Avoid deleting app data, reinstalling or editing saves as a response to an ordinary battle loss.

For the next difficult island, decide in advance when to retreat. The official description explicitly makes evacuation part of the game. Preserving a valuable commander can matter more than defending every house, but an evacuation must actually get the squad out; abandoning units is not the same as rescuing them.

If the commander appears missing because of a bug

For PC portraits turning into white squares or units becoming invisible, the developer's specific support article recommends restarting the game and loading the save. This is an older PC troubleshooting article, not a verified fix for every mobile issue. It also does not claim that restarting reverses a legitimate death.

  • Platform, store and installed game version.
  • What the screen shows, preferably with a screenshot.
  • Whether the commander died in combat, was left behind, survived but became unavailable, or vanished after an upgrade or reload.
  • Whether this was an established squad or a local commander you were trying to recruit.
  • What restart or checkpoint options remain, and what you have already tried.

Send save files only through the official support route if requested. Support may investigate a technical fault; this guide does not promise that it can restore a commander lost through normal gameplay.

Check the result before playing on

After any recovery attempt, inspect the roster and the campaign position. You want the correct commander alive at the point you intended to resume, not merely a menu that closed without an error. If you rewound to a checkpoint, recheck your army before relying on purchases or recruits from the later timeline.

The shortest safe sequence is: identify the loss, check the available rescue, understand its cost, then verify the result. Resting, replaying an island, using a Grail and resetting a checkpoint solve different problems.
