A level-8 weapon is only one part of an evolution. You also need its recipe's other ingredients and a chest capable of awarding the result. Filling your passive slots too early or saving the wrong chest can leave a nearly finished build waiting for something it can no longer obtain.
This guide turns those requirements into a practical route for early base-game evolutions. It uses ordinary solo play, especially the normal Inlaid Library, without character-specific evolution overrides, chest-generating Arcanas or DLC recipes. It is a planning method, not a fixed build that assumes the same level-up choices appear in every run.
Start with one complete recipe
For the three recipes below, the weapon must reach level 8. The matching passive only needs to be owned; level 1 is enough to meet that recipe's requirement. Then collect an evolution-capable chest while both are in your inventory.
| Base weapon | Required passive | Result | Passive must be maxed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Wand, level 8 | Empty Tome | Holy Wand | No |
| King Bible, level 8 | Spellbinder | Unholy Vespers | No |
| Axe, level 8 | Candelabrador | Death Spiral | No |
These are examples of simple base-game recipes, not a universal rule for every weapon. Other evolutions can require max-level passives, multiple weapons or different conditions. Do not spend four extra levels maxing Empty Tome solely because you think Holy Wand requires it; equally, do not assume a level-1 passive completes a later recipe that explicitly requires the maximum.
A normal evolution replaces its base weapon and leaves the catalyst passive in your inventory. It does not free the passive slot. If you intend to acquire another passive later, allow for that before the row fills.
Unlock the ingredients before depending on level-up offers
Magic Wand, King Bible and Axe are available by default, but their catalysts have unlock conditions for the normal item pool:
| Passive | Unlock condition |
|---|---|
| Empty Tome | Hold six different weapons at once |
| Spellbinder | Get Runetracer to level 7 |
| Candelabrador | Get Santa Water to level 4 |
If an ingredient is still locked, make unlocking it a goal of an earlier run rather than repeatedly waiting for an unavailable level-up choice. Stage pickups provide a separate opportunity: Empty Tome is present on the normal Inlaid Library floor, so that stage offers a direct route to the Wand's catalyst.
Finish a weapon instead of spreading every upgrade evenly
Suppose you already own Magic Wand, King Bible and Axe at level 1. Each needs seven further weapon levels to reach 8. Finishing all three requires 21 weapon upgrades, separate from acquiring their passives.
The first seven upgrades can leave you in very different positions:
| How seven upgrades are allocated | Weapon levels afterward | Weapons ready for their evolution recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Seven into Magic Wand | Wand 8, Bible 1, Axe 1 | One, if its catalyst is owned |
| Three into Wand, two into Bible, two into Axe | Wand 4, Bible 3, Axe 3 | None |
Both lines spend the same number of upgrades. Concentrating them can produce an evolution opportunity earlier. The cost is that your other weapons remain weak, so this is a priority rule rather than an instruction to refuse every useful defensive choice.
Choose a lead weapon from what the run actually offers. If one is already level 6 with its catalyst secured, that is usually a more immediate evolution project than a newly offered weapon whose passive is still missing. Take an important survival upgrade when necessary, then return to the lead recipe instead of starting another unfinished project each time a new icon appears.
Random level-up offers prevent a guaranteed minute-by-minute schedule. The useful commitment is which offered upgrade you prefer, not a promise that the next seven levels will all offer your chosen weapon.
Why waiting until ten minutes does not fix every chest
A chest's evolution eligibility is tied to its reward configuration, normally associated with the boss wave that produced it. It does not become an evolution chest merely because you leave it on the ground until the timer passes 10:00.
On the normal Inlaid Library, the ordinary pre-10-minute boss chests cannot evolve a weapon. An eligible chest from a later qualifying boss is a different opportunity. Killing an old boss late is not a way to upgrade the chest type attached to that boss.
There are stage exceptions. The first Glowing Bat chest from the 1:00 wave in Mad Forest can evolve a weapon, while Dairy Plant allows evolutions from its early chests. Those exceptions are why “always wait ten minutes” is an unreliable universal instruction.
The safe distinction is between two decisions:
- An ineligible early chest can provide ordinary upgrades now; waiting does not turn it into an evolution reward.
- An eligible chest can be worth saving briefly if your recipe is one upgrade away from completion.
If Arcanas are active, a chest offering an Arcana is also not the ordinary evolution opportunity you may have expected. Its purpose is different while you can still receive another Arcana.
Worked chest decision: the Wand is level 7
Imagine you have Magic Wand at level 7 and Empty Tome at level 1. An evolution-capable chest is on the ground, and the surrounding enemies are manageable.
You are one weapon level short. Leaving that chest available, collecting enough experience for a Wand upgrade and then opening it completes the recipe in the correct order. Opening it immediately cannot award Holy Wand while the Wand is still below its required level; it may instead provide an ordinary upgrade.
Now change the situation: enemies are closing in, your damage is weak and moving through the chest is the safest route. Taking the immediate reward can be the better survival decision. A saved evolution opportunity has no value if the run ends before you finish the recipe.
Finally, change the chest rather than the weapon: it is an ordinary early Library chest that cannot evolve. Do not circle around it waiting for level 8 or 10:00. Use its ordinary reward if it helps, then plan around a qualifying later chest.
This is a useful three-way choice: save an eligible chest for a nearly complete recipe, take a reward that keeps the run alive, or stop saving a chest that cannot perform the job at all.
Passive slots: reserve the catalyst before the row fills
The standard level-up inventory allows six weapons and six passive items. A fresh passive selected while space remains occupies one of those six passive slots. Once the ordinary passive row is full, you cannot rely on level-ups to offer a seventh new ordinary passive.
Stage items are the important exception: a new passive picked up from the floor after the six slots are filled can be added beyond that limit. Picking it up earlier, while a slot remains, uses that ordinary slot instead.
That gives a concrete choice in the Library. Suppose your five passives do not include Spellbinder or Empty Tome, and you want both Bible and Wand evolutions. Empty Tome is available on the floor to the west; Spellbinder is not one of the Library's normal floor passives.
| Next action | Result | Consequence for the two recipes |
|---|---|---|
| Pick up the floor Tome as passive number six | The normal row is full without Spellbinder | The Bible catalyst can no longer be obtained through an ordinary new-item level-up offer |
| Take Spellbinder as passive number six, then collect the floor Tome | Six passives plus Tome as a seventh | Both catalysts are present |
The second route preserves both options. It is not automatically the right survival choice: if the Tome's immediate benefit is needed to stay alive, taking it now and abandoning the Bible evolution plan can be better than dying while protecting an ideal inventory.
The principle is to reserve level-up slots for ingredients you cannot obtain on the floor of the current stage. Do not fill the last slot with an unrelated passive just because it is useful in isolation. Ask which recipe that choice would close off.
A practical Library route without a fixed full build
Unlock the normal Inlaid Library by reaching level 20 in Mad Forest. In the Library, Empty Tome lies west of the starting area. The Grim Grimoire relic is also to the west and permanently adds the discovered-evolution reference to the pause menu.
Use the following route as a sequence of decisions, not a promise about item rolls:
- Establish enough damage to collect experience safely, then identify the weapon closest to a complete recipe.
- Secure its catalyst through a level-up offer or a planned stage pickup. Protect a slot if the catalyst must come from level-ups.
- Move toward the western pickups when the surrounding enemies allow it. Continue gathering experience rather than treating the journey as a sprint past everything.
- Decide whether Empty Tome should enter an open slot now or be collected after your six ordinary passives are selected.
- Bring the lead weapon to level 8 and use a qualifying chest. Then select the next recipe from the weapons and passives already owned.
You do not need six completed evolution plans before your first evolution. A small plan with one secured catalyst is more useful than a full imagined loadout that depends on several missing offers.
Nor should the floor-item trick become an obligation. Taking Tome early costs a potential extra passive slot, but grants its effect immediately and removes a missing ingredient from your first evolution. Delaying it buys inventory flexibility at the cost of later access and travel. Choose according to whether the run needs strength now or can safely invest in a broader final inventory.
When two recipes are ready at once
An ordinary evolution-capable chest generally provides one evolution, even when its animation awards several items. Some specific chests support multiple evolutions, but a three-item or five-item animation by itself is not a guarantee that every ready weapon will evolve.
For planning purposes, do not count a single ordinary chest as the completion of three projects. If two weapons are ready, keep the remaining recipe intact after the first evolves and continue toward another qualifying opportunity.
This also changes how to value the next upgrade. Once your first recipe is ready and a suitable chest is available, further passive levels are improvements to the build, not missing requirements for the three recipes listed above. Take the evolution opportunity rather than delaying it solely to fill every level bar.
Banish is not a way to tidy away an unfinished recipe
Banishing an owned item stops its normal level-up and chest upgrades while it remains banished. If you banish a needed weapon below its evolution level, you have blocked the ordinary route to finishing it. Banishing a required passive below a recipe's required maximum can create the same problem.
Before using Banish, distinguish “I no longer need more levels here” from “I am tired of seeing this option.” For the simple recipes in this guide, level-1 catalysts are enough; other recipes may still require those passive levels. Keep the remaining requirements in view before removing future upgrades.
Diagnose a missing evolution by the unfinished part
If a chest gives an ordinary upgrade instead of the evolution you wanted, first identify which part of the recipe was incomplete at pickup. A maxed weapon with the wrong passive is not ready. A correct recipe in front of an ineligible chest also is not an evolution opportunity.
If the recipe is correct, distinguish a special chest reward from an ordinary evolution reward, and check that the evolved result has not been banished. A full weapon row alone is not the reason a standard replacement evolution fails: it replaces the base weapon rather than requiring a spare seventh weapon slot.
For your next run, fix the missing dependency rather than starting with a more complicated build. Choose one recipe, preserve its catalyst route, concentrate enough upgrades to finish the weapon and collect the right chest. Once those four decisions are reliable, adding a second and third evolution becomes much easier.
